The Daily Mile™ County Recognition Scheme

The Daily MileTM is a free national initiative, supporting schools to get children fit for life and fit for learning, by encouraging them to run or jog for 15 minutes every day in their school. This physical activity promotes social, emotional and mental health and wellbeing, as well as fitness.  It takes place outside in the fresh air during the school day at a time of the teacher’s choosing.  Children run in their school clothes, with no special kit or equipment required and it is easy to carry out in class bubbles/socially distanced.

There are resources available to give some guidance and ideas around doing The Daily MileTM  in the current climate and Alana Lawes ( – Cambridge, South Cambs and Peterborough Schools) and Anna O’Leary ( – East Cambs, Huntingdonshire and Fenland Schools) are on hand to support you.

The Daily Mile County Recognition Scheme is to recognise and reward schools delivering regular physical activity via The Daily Mile, through its Core Principles.  It is introduced with backing from both the Director of Public Health and the Director of Education at the City and County Councils, to help embed The Daily Mile within the school day.

NEW: Spring Challenge – Climbing Mount Mile

Set off from base camp: Friday 5th February 2021

Reach the summit by: Friday 28th May 2021

(for the chance to be entered into the prize draw. The Climbing Mount Mile resource, however, can be used at any time)

It is hoped that schools across the county will join in the expedition up Mount Mile when it launches on the 5th February to coincide with Children and Young People’s Mental Health Awareness Week. Along the journey there will be wellbeing rewards and resources for both staff and students to “unlock.”

All schools who reach the summit by the end of the challenge (May 28th) will be entered into a draw to win a live Q & A session (either in person or virtually) with The Daily Mile local champion, paralympian, Sam Ruddock.

In addition to this, the nationwide event  ‘England Does The Daily Mile’  takes place on Friday 30th April ( this has been pushed back from the original date of 5th February due to the national lockdown.) The aim is to get 1 million children doing the Daily Mile on this day across the country. It would therefore be fantastic if all the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough schools that are already registered for the Daily Mile could take part in both of these initiatives.

In light of the Covid -19 pandemic, mental health awareness and its relation to physical activity is incredibly important. The intention, therefore, of  “England Does The Daily Mile” is that young people across the nation will be encouraged to get active together and start talking about their mental health. Sign up is quick and free and provides access to a whole host of fun resources.
