Summary of Intervention/Programme
Ability PLUS Group; is the County Disability Sports Forum for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. The Ability PLUS Group is a network that promotes sport and active recreation for people with disabilities or additional needs. The group membership includes representatives from Local Authorities, Governing Bodies of sport, mainstream and special Schools, local and national sporting and disability organisations. Working in partnership is the key to the success of the group. The Group was firstly set up to support the delivery of events like the Youth Games PLUS. The group now has a much wider remit and is seen as a key strategic group for disability sports and physical activity development in the area.
The Group’s objectives are to:
- To foster and promote the provision of sporting and active recreation opportunities for people with disabilities or additional needs
- To support and assist people with disabilities by enhancing the opportunities to participate, organise, volunteer, coach and develop through their involvement in sport
- To develop and/or promote local, regional and national sporting events
- To bring key groups and partners together across the County to increase the potential for people with a disability to engage in sport
- To adopt and operate within the safeguarding children, young people and adults at risk policy and Equality policy of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Active Partnership
The Ability PLUS group meet on a quarterly basis, in January, April, July and October, the venue moves around the county. Anyone is welcome to attend the full group meetings. Meeting are normally based around a theme and there is plenty opportunity to network with others. The Group is coordinated by a committee which is elected from the group’s membership each year in January at the AGM. The committee represents a cross section of partners on the group and help steer the group, making decisions on behalf of the group to support the development meeting themes and agendas.
