To nurture the skills of resilience is key to providing young people with the ability to cope with stress, adversity, failure and challenges. Resilience is evident when young people have a greater ability to “bounce back” when faced with difficulties and achieve positive outcomes.
Resilience empowers the individual to be aware of first aid practices and to have the confidence to deal with a situation and to call for help whilst remaining calm and collected.
It is now a requirement that children and young people should be taught first aid skills at both primary and secondary levels, as part of the newly statutory Health Education Curriculum.
The Department for Education recommends that pupils in Key Stage 2 should know:
- how to make a clear and efficient call to the emergency services
- basic first aid concepts, for example, dealing with common injuries such as head injuries.
The Department for Education recommends that pupils at Key Stage 3 and 4 should know:
- how and when to deliver CPR
- the concept and use of Automated External Defibrillation (AED).
In addition, it is suggested that KS 3 and 4 pupils should also know the concepts of common first aid emergencies, and that they are provided a recap of the first aid skills taught in Key Stage 2.
