Through the School Plates initiative, ProVeg UK supports schools, local authorities and caterers to make simple and easy to implement menu changes that are proven to increase the uptake of meat-free meals. These changes can help reduce carbon footprints and encourage more sustainable choices thereby achieving three key goals – to improve children’s health, to save money and protect the planet!
Schools choosing to participate in the free School Plates programme will receive consultancy which includes:
• Menu review and feedback – evidence-based feedback is provided on how to increase the uptake of veggie and plant-based dishes.
• Plant-based recipe development – all recipes comply with Healthy Eating in Schools guidance, are planet-friendly, nutritionally balanced, low cost and inclusive. New, bespoke recipes can also be created in consultation with participating schools.
• Plant-based Cooking in Schools Workshops. These can take place Online: One hour, once a month via Zoom or In-person: a nutritionist and chef trainer can visit the school catering team to deliver an interactive half day session in the kitchen to inspire the creation of delicious, simple recipes specifically to appeal to the students.
• School Plates Awards – this is way of celebrating the great efforts of school caterers to create planet-friendly menus. These can be submitted for review to [email protected] with feedback being provided.
