Firebreak One is, as the name suggests, an intensive one-day training course which supports the development of four key life skills. These being :
Resilience – Having a positive outlook, managing emotions, being able to adapt well in the face of adversity.
Healthy Relationships – Feeling supported, being able to communicate openly and honestly, being able to maintain a meaningful emotional connection.
Self-Efficacy – Having a growth mindset, having a belief in one’s own ability.
Aspirations – Having Positive role models, having self-esteem and confidence.
During the day the young people will participate in teams to complete a range of tasks which will require them to make connections and work together to succeed; most importantly they will be encouraged to consider their individual responses and identify the skills they have applied. Through the process of reflection, the aim is for the young people to build confidence and self-esteem which will motivate them to focus on practical and purposeful achievement in the future.
The Theory behind the framework of Firebreak One – Planned Behaviour
Young people who have little self-worth or self-belief often have a poor attitude towards themselves and others. Their approach to life is to avoid situations in which they perceive they may fail and therefore they appear disinterested and not wanting to try at a task.
In turn this can lead others to expect that these young people are not prepared to try in life thus resulting in a self-fulfilling prophecy which ultimately impacts on the young people’s school work and future opportunities.
The intention of Firebreak One, therefore, is to provide a “break” in the cycle and boost the young people’s aspirations and sense of self-worth.
By the end of the day, each participant will be empowered to write an action plan for moving forwards with their life, adopting a positive and confident approach.
For those, individuals still requiring support to achieve this, then follow up visits can be arranged by the Firebreak team.
